At the south end of Sausalito is wide valley of numbered streets surrounded by low ridges and the San Francisco Bay. Settled in the mid-19th century, there is an eclectic mix of cottages, multi-family homes, and charming single family homes. They all enjoy a short walk to town, an old-town charm, and a few minutes’ drive over the Golden Gate Bridge to San Francisco.

The diversity of home styles reflects the original inhabitants, including fisherman and ship builders, railroad workers, merchants, wealthy San Francisco families, and a colony of English expatriates. William Randolph Hearst once owned a large parcel here and began to build an extravagant mansion there; parts of the foundation remain.

When the fog comes through the Golden Gate, Old Town may become “Hurricane Gulch” with cold winds coming through the hills to the west. Even then, the views are spectacular and changing by the hour. Great views across the water come with occasional wind and fog, but always beautiful.

Private Location

Even though the tourist area on Bridgeway is less than half a mile away, few tourists find their way over the hills to Old Town. By evening, visitors have left for San Francisco, leaving a peaceful downtown for residents.

Flat streets near the bay climb the surrounding hills to provide the best views. Some of the streets, like a part of 2nd Street, were too steep for horses or cars, so were built as pedestrian stairs.
