The best and most reliable waterfalls on Mount Tamalpais are in Cascade Canyon, which descends from the top of the mountain to the end of Cascade Drive in Fairfax. This year, after one of the heaviest rains, Madeline made the easy walk (about 1.5 miles round trip) up Cascade Creek to see torrents of water coming down every valley and wash. The trail ends at the high Cascade Canyon waterfall with a mesmerizing rush of water.
You can drive to the end of Cascade Drive and then take the High Water Trail, or go to the end of Canyon Road and take Canyon Trail. Parking is limited on both roads, so visits on weekdays and less popular hours are a good strategy. When the water flow is high it is unsafe to cross Cascade Creek except on the bridges.
